Chakyar Koothu

Chakyar Koothu is one of performing art of Kerala. This is all about the criticism of the latest events that happened in a humoristic manner. In this stories of puranas combined with prevailing socio-political events are performed by the Chakyar (Performer).

The medium used is Malayalam along with the original Sanskrit text so that common person can understand. Minimum choreography is used compared with Kathakali and all, so facial expression is very important. Normally Chakyar Koothu is performed in a place called Koothambalam inside the temple.

But now a days it is become common in most of stage programs. Because of the comedy it is being attracted by many people. He is licensed to tease and cut jokes on anyone among the audience.

Chakyar Koothu was traditionally performed by the Chakyar community. The instruments used are only mizhavu and ilathalam.

Earlier Chakyar Koothu was performed only in temples, later Padma Shri Mani Madhava Chakyar took it outside temples to the common people. Other famous performers are late Ammannur Madhava Chakyar and Painkulam Raman Chakyar.
